Thomas Gurney († c. 7 July 1333) was a retainer of Thomas Berkeley. He was assigned to guard the deposed Edward II at Berkeley Castle. In 1330 he was accused of the murder of Edward II and sentenced to death in absentia. He fled to Spain, where he was captured in Burgos the following year. He escaped, but fell into the hands of his persecutors again and died in Bayonne in 1333.
Edward II
Together with Matrevis, Mortimer appoints him in [Scene 19] as the new guard for the abdicated Edward II, whom they torture and humiliate. Both also thwart the liberation attempt by Kent. They support Lightborn in the assassination of the king. Afterwards, Gurney kills Lightborn according to Mortimer’s orders. Mortimer then learns from Matrevis that Gurney has escaped.
