Jacques Clément (* 1567; † 1 August 1589) was a Dominican friar and fanatical member of the Catholic League. He gained access to Henri III in Saint-Cloud by pretending he had letters to deliver to the king. After he had been let in, he told the king that he also had a confidential message to deliver to him. The king allowed him to come closer and Clément stabbed him. The assassin was immediately killed by the royal guards.
The Massacre at Paris
The name Jacques Clément is not mentioned in the text. Instead, the role is called "Jacobin Friar". The first Dominican monastery in Paris was located in Rue St. Jacques. Until the French Revolution, they were therefore also called Jacobins. Whether there was ever a meeting between Clément and the Duke of Mayenne as described in [Scene 23] is not proven, but rather unlikely. Clément was certainly supported by the League, but to what extent individuals were involved can no longer be determined. After the attack in [Scene 24] it is Henri III who kills the assassin, in fact it were the guards.
